Tips for Pest Control

Servall Termite & Pest Control always wants to share pest control tips and strategies with our customers. The more you know the less pest problems you will have! Take a look at these ideas.

The insect problem areas of your home may or may not be as big a surprise as you would think. Remember that most all pests have three main things in common: the need for air, water, and food. For those reasons, pest control technicians, like those at Servall Pest Control, know that the two easiest places for pests to thrive will be your Kitchen/Dining Room and your bathroom.

The Kitchen/Dining Room area is usually the biggest problem area for most people because of the abundance of two key ingredients: food and water. Most insects can be found in cabinets and/or pantry areas, thriving on the food staples housed there. If a pest can go two feet and have all he can eat and drink, why would he travel farther?

The Bathroom area presents another resource for pests- a dark, wet, and cool place away from the elements of the outside world. Again, they have plenty of moisture to survive and have found a place where they can nest and breed easily while being contained in an environment that provides what they need. Bathrooms can easily attract a multitude of species of insects, so it also becomes a feeding ground for most common species of spiders as well.

Insect Pest Control Tips
The easiest way to help you eliminate pest issues in these areas, here are some simple and easy to remember steps.

Kitchen
  • Place all pantry foods in plastic sealed containers. This will help eliminate over half of your basic insect and pest problems.
  • Wipe down all surfaces after every meal or preparation of meals. This keeps small food particles out of reach and off of the floors.
  • Clean your garbage disposal. Food particles build up on the cutting blades and cause odor and attractants for insects of all kinds.
  • Indoor plants are a breeding ground for pests, as it is as close to being in their natural habitat as being outside. If you keep plants inside do not over water them. This causes many pest problems to develop.
Bathroom
  • Clean your drains regularly. Materials build up in this area and cause odors that again can draw pests to this location.
  • Wet laundry and sustained moisture can help any pests that wish to breed or just nest for a while.
  • Trash bins need to be emptied regularly. Any dense material or compacted material can make a great place for spiders to set up and attract food.
  • Avoid standing water. Like a day at the pool for the kids, this is a playground for pests.

  1. Pests are little animals which live in our homes. They include termites, mosquitoes or even rodents that eat or live on food. They are very harmful for our health as they can cause serious diseases if one eats the food contaminated by these pests. In order to make sure that these creatures do not endanger our lives and health, pest control is necessary to protect us.

  3. I agree, Celine! They really can be so annoying and disgusting when they get into your food. The other day I poured a cereal bowl and there were, of course, my favorite friends in the bowl waiting for me. That day I realized that I need to get pest control.

  4. I've been having some bad pest issues. We've currently got a cockroach problem in my houses basement. I think my kids might have left food down there or something, because I find a roach pretty much everyday. I'm really getting sick of it, so I'll probably be using your tips next week when I go to clean it out.

  5. I never considered that a clogged drain could attract pests. That might explain why I had ants in my sink last year. The ants went away after I unclogged the sink. I guess that I fixed the problem without even knowing it. http://www.americanpestsolutions-mnwi.com

  6. The toughest thing about rodents are catching them before they go back into their safe-haven hole. Will these kitchen tips to keep the food away and off the floor help with rodents too? We're going to make sure to take your advice on the kitchen section and keep our garbage disposal cleaned along with our pantry's food kept in plastic containers.

  7. I had a huge issue with tiny sugar ants coming into my kitchen last year. By the time we resolved to call a professional it was already winter. This year I think I will buy a service before the issue arises so that I don't have to deal with it at all. Luckily we haven't had any bug issues yet, but I think that is due to the cold weather.

  8. I learned your first tip the hard way. I lived in Hawaii for a few years and we accidentally left some rice out overnight. When we woke up, it looked like there was rice spilled all over the floor, but upon closer inspection we realized there were hundreds of tiny maggots everywhere! It's worse in Hawaii than most places because of the humidity, but I'll never make that mistake again. Thanks for sharing your tips with us! http://advancepestcontrol.net/

  9. The bathroom being a dark, wet, cool place as you say, totally explains why I always seem to have fly's and other creatures in there. I don't really have a problem with any other area of the house. That is interesting that clogged drain smells attract insects. I had no idea.

  10. I have the most random moth problem right now. I have seen moths before, but I've never seen them in my house. It's really bugging me and I have been wanting to get rid of them. Do pest control services take care of moths? I thought maybe they only took care of ants and termites. http://www.rpcandtermite.net/

  14. I would not have thought that the smell of food from a garbage disposal would attract bugs. It is a smart way to eliminate pest by cleaning the garbage disposal. I am just wondering what is the best way to do that, and how often should it be cleaned?
