With Wood Destroying Fungus problems becoming a nation-wide health and structural problem, Servall recognized the need to be able to better serve and protect our communities.

What Wood Destroying Fungus Are

Wood Destroying Fungi are organisms that may be found indoors and outdoors. They are part of the natural environment and play an important role in the environment by breaking down and digesting organic material, such as dead leaves. Also called fungi or mildew, Wood Destroying Fungus are neither plants nor animals; they are part of the kingdom Fungi.

Wood Destroying Fungus can multiply by producing microscopic spores (2-100 microns in diameter), similar to the seeds produced by plants. Many spores are so small they easily float through air and can be carried for great distances by even the gentlest breezes. The number of Wood Destroying Fungus spores suspended in indoor and outdoor air fluctuates from season to season, day to day, and even hour to hour.

Wood Destroying Fungus spores are ubiquitous; they are found both indoors and outdoors. Wood Destroying Fungus spores cannot be eliminated from indoor environments. Some Wood Destroying Fungus spores will be found floating through the air and in settled dust; however, they will not grow if moisture is not present.

What Wood Destroying Fungus Needs to Grow

To grow indoors, Wood Destroying Fungus needs moisture and food. Moisture is the most important factor influencing Wood Destroying Fungus growth indoors. Controlling indoor moisture helps limit its growth.

Health Effects That May Be Caused by Inhaling Wood Destroying Fungus or Wood Destroying Fungus Spores

Inhalation exposure to Wood Destroying Fungus indoors can cause adverse health effects in some people. Wood Destroying Fungus produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances or chemicals (mycotoxins). Inhaling or touching Wood Destroying Fungus or Wood Destroying Fungus spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Wood Destroying Fungus does not have to be alive to cause an allergic reaction. Dead or alive, Wood Destroying Fungus can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Allergic Reactions, Asthma Attacks, Irritant Effects

Allergic reactions to Wood Destroying Fungus are common and can be immediate or delayed. Repeated or single exposure to Wood Destroying Fungus, Wood Destroying Fungus spores, or Wood Destroying Fungus fragments may cause non-sensitive individuals to become sensitive to it, and repeated exposure has potential to increase sensitivity. Allergic responses include hay fever-like symptoms such as headache, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash (dermatitis). Wood Destroying Fungi can cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to it. In addition, Wood Destroying Fungi can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs of individuals whether or not the are allergic.

Other Health Effects

Breathing in Wood Destroying Fungus spores may also cause Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, and uncommon disease that resembles bacterial pneumonia. In addition, Wood Destroying Fungus exposure may result in opportunistic infections in persons whose immune systems are weakened or suppressed.

When Wood Destroying Fungus grows indoors, the occupants of a building may begin to report odors and a variety of symptoms including headaches, difficulty breathing, skin irritation, allergic reactions, and aggravated asthma systems. These and other symptoms may be associated with exposure to Wood Destroying Fungus. But all of these symptoms may be caused by other exposures or conditions unrelated to its growth. Therefore, it is important not to assume that, whenever any of these symptoms occurs, it is the cause.

For more detailed information on Wood Destroying Fungus and its health effects, consult a health professional. You may also wish to consult your state or local health department.

Although it is frequently found in damp buildings, it is not the only potential contaminant - biological contaminants other than Wood Destroying Fungus, and non-biological contaminants are often present and may also cause health effects. Damp buildings may attract rodents and other pests. Damp or wet building components and furnishings may release chemicals indoors.

Potential contaminants in damp and wet buildings include bacteria, dust mites, cockroaches and other pests, as well as chemicals emitted by damp building materials and furnishings.

Mycotoxins and Health Effects

As wood destroying fungi grow, some (but not all) of them produce potentially toxic by-products called mycotoxins under some conditions. Some of these are commonly found in moisture-damaged building. More than 200 mycotoxins from common fungi have been identified, and more remain to be identified. The amount and types of mycotoxins produced by a particular fungi depends on many environmental and genetic factors. No one can tell whether a it is producing mycotoxins just by looking at it. Some mycotoxins are known to affect people, but for many mycotoxins little health information is available. Research on mycotoxins is ongoing. Exposure to mycotoxins can occur from inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact. It is prudent to avoid unnecessary inhalation exposure.

For more information on mycotoxins, see the 2004 Institute of Medicine Report, "Damp Indoor Spaces and Health", published by The National Academies Press in Washington, DC, and available on the Web.

Wood Destroying Fungus Growth

Wood Destroying Fungus can grow on virtually any organic material as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are fungi that grow on wood, paper, carpet, food, and insulation. Because it eats or digests what it is growing on, it can damage a building and its furnishings. If left unchecked, eventually it can cause structural damage to building materials.

Wood Destroying Fungus gradually destroy the things they grow on. You can prevent damage to buildings and building contents, save money, and avoid potential health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating its growth.

Termite Control Services from Servall

We specialize in:

• Liquid Treatments
• Bait Treatments
• Termite Insurance

Servall offers free inspections to anyone in our service areas. Termite season is here.Termites will begin swarming as soon as spring approaches with temperatures in the 70's. If you have purchased, built, or added onto your house, you should have it inspected to prevent potential structural damage. Termites cause approximately 300 million dollars in damages a year! If you are thinking of building any structure, you should discuss with your Contractor the need to perform soil pre-treatments. Most people don't realize the cost of PRE-treatments is normally half of the cost of POST-treatment!

If you have just purchased a newly constructed home and it isn't covered by a termite contract, you should have it inspected. Without a current termite contract, a structure should be treated every 5 years. Once your home has sustained severe damage, you will not be able to receive a Damage Replacement Contract.

Many people believe that because a building is made with concrete floors or block walls, it is safe from termites. Actually, that is not true! Termite colonies can establish under concrete due to moisture content or wood debris in the backfill.

Spring is the time of year that people feel the need to do maintenance on their biggest investment – their home! Servall Termite Company, LLC can help with your year roundspring project. We can check for termites, moisture, mold, vents access doors and gutters. We can even install floor supports to prevent your floors from sagging, shaking, drywall cracking and doors not opening properly. Remember, all our inspections are free and all work is warranted! In business since 1963, Servall Termite Co. has the experience you can trust. Call and schedule your free inspection so we can help protect your investment and your health!

Great Ant Control Tips

Ants can be one of Summer's biggest threats inside you home. Here are some great ant control tips to try before calling in the professionals from the people at the statusclean.com

Even in clean homes, ants can find their way into kitchens and other rooms in search of food. During the warmer spring and summer months, indoor ant invasions are more common. Natural ant control methods are effective in controlling ant invasions, and they're preferable in homes with children or pets. In order to eliminate these and other pests, including termites and silverfish, an action plan with multiple components is your best bet.

Eliminate the Attractions

Make sure the foods that ants like best, like sugar and honey, are stored in the fridge or in jars with rubber gaskets and clamping lids. Screw-top jars without a rubber seal are insufficient, as ants can follow the threads into the jar. Transfer other foods into containers with tight lids, and be aware that cardboard boxes won't keep ants out. If you have pets, either feed them only what they will eat in one sitting before washing out the bowl, or place their food bowl in a "moat" of water in a larger dish or tray. Store garbage in a container with a tight-fitting lid and take it out frequently. Keep countertops and floors free of spills and crumbs.

Make Your Home Unfriendly to Ants

Erase the ants' scent trails by wiping the area with organic substances known to be effective in ant control. These include lemon juice, peppermint oil and vinegar. Sprinkle cayenne pepper, coffee grounds or baking soda in cracks or corners where ants have been seen entering the house. This disrupts ant trails and repels the invaders.

Outside the house, remove all bushes and branches that make contact with the house to prevent ants from using these to gain access through a door, window or plumbing fixture. Around the base of the home's foundation, organic ant control can be achieved by creating a barrier which ants won't want to cross, such as a trail of sprinkled chalk or diatomaceous earth. Electronic pest control is also an increasingly popular option.

Eradicate the Ants

Products which are less harmful to humans and pets yet remain effective in ant extermination often contain boric acid or borax. Use these products where you see ants, and they will carry them back into their nests and share them with the colony. Ant killer products should be used with caution, as they can contain dangerous toxins such as arsenic. In addition, these products sometimes kill the forager ants before they have time to bring the bait into the colony to share, so the ant invasion will likely continue.

When choosing an ant bait, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, if the insecticide bait is working, you will initially see an increase in the number of ants around the bait station, which means that they are feeding or preparing to carry the poison back to the nest. Although you'll undoubtedly be tempted to spray them, just leave them be: the idea is to let the ants eradicate themselves over the course of a few days. Also keep in mind that ants will change their food preferences, so you may need to go through a few different brands of bait to wipe out the whole colony.

Great Tips for Reducing Pests while Still Enjoying the Outdoors

Great Summer weather makes everyone want to go outside and explore the outdoors. Here are some great summer tips to keep pests away while you're outside from the people at the dailyherald.com

Summer living goes outdoors in most parts of the country. Flowers are in bloom and the sun is shining and your hammock is waiting for you. Of course, so are the bugs! Here are some of our favorite tips for ridding your backyard of pests.

The first step in pest control is to hit them where they live. In other words, get rid of their living quarters. Most bugs like a cushy pad, so remove nesting materials like bags of mulch, brush and grass piles. Mow your yard as it grows, and keep plants tidy, removing dead leaves, flowers and fruit. Get rid of old birds’ nests and piles of wood and other decaying materials that tend to pile up in one’s backyard.

Bugs also need food and water, so make sure you remove any sources of water, like the standing water in trays under flowerpots, empty containers that collect rainwater and other standing water. Clean out gutters, which can clog and provide nesting materials and water for bugs.

Bug-repellent candles, torches and incense are one way to keep the bugs at bay. They also add to the ambience of the area.

There also is a wide variety of sprays that can be used around your backyard entertaining area that will get rid of bugs and keep them away while you are having your barbecue.

Flies can be deterred by hanging clear bags of water or mirrors on your patio. For some reason, the flies can’t stand these items and will stay away.

Certain plants, like the citronella plant, give off a scent that repels bugs.

You can buy specially made bracelets and even clothes that have a built-in bug repellent. They actually work and will last for several months or washings, whichever comes first.

Remember to be safe with pesticides and that some bugs are actually beneficial … as long as they are not bugging you!
